Work at Sundog Farm

Working on Sundog Farm

Sundog Farm is a diversified vegetable and livestock farm in between Solon and Mt Vernon Iowa, and is the home of Local Harvest CSA. Local Harvest CSA provides vegetables for 150-200 families from April thru December at 5 pickup locations on the farm and in nearby towns. Our production goal is to grow a variety of high quality produce using organic practices, so we have an abundant and varied share of vegetables each week. We rotationally graze a flock of sheep, a small herd of dairy goats, and broiler chickens, and market the meat locally. We focus on production practices that allow us to efficiently and reliably grow high quality vegetables over a long season while improving soil health and promoting pollinators and other beneficial wildlife. These practices include season extension, crop rotation, planting and grazing cover crops, and more.

Why Sundog Farm?

There are many opportunities to work on small farms, so why choose this one?

A supportive work environment. We believe anyone should have the opportunity to be a farmer regardless of identity, economic situation, or ability, and work to create an environment where everyone on the farm can see ourselves as farmers.

More learning. We have well-established systems and carefully curated equipment, and believe in learning by doing.

An awesome, intergenerational farm community. Our farm family ranges in age from kids to retired folks, and we love how growing food is a fun and meaningful activity that brings people together.

All the vegetables you can eat. We encourage all members of our crew to take home lots of vegetables, and to experiment with cooking what we grow.

Several members of our team have gone on to farm on their own, and our goal is to create a larger community of successful small farmers that support each other through good times and bad. Other former members of our team that have not gone on to farm on their own have written their college essays about working on the farm, or used their experiences to inform their work in journalism, art, and conservation.
